FAQs of IIA Volunteer Engagement

Become an IIA Volunteer

There are many ways you can get involved with The IIA. Whether you are an experienced leader or just entering the field of internal auditing, there is a place for you — locally or globally — at The IIA.

General Information and Conflict of Interest

The IIA is committed to the highest ethical standards in order to merit and maintain the confidence and trust of its members and the public at large. Note that all Board volunteer leaders must sign an Annual Conflict of Interest Declaration to ensure that members act in the best interest of The IIA.

Volunteers should be alert to any interest they may have that might be considered in conflict with the best interests of The IIA.

NOTE: Volunteers may not contemporaneously serve on the Global Board or the NA Board and any affiliate board; this policy does not apply to the Board of Trustees.

An excerpt from the Board Policy Manual’s Conflict of Interest Section Volunteers should be alert to any interest they may have that might be considered in conflict with the best interests of The IIA. When a Volunteer, directly or indirectly, has a financial or personal interest in a contract or transaction to which The IIA is to be party, or is contemplating entering into a transaction that involves use of The IIA’s assets or competition against The IIA, the Volunteer is considered to be “interested” in the matter. Volunteers may not contemporaneously serve on the Global Board or the NA Board and any affiliate board.

The Nominating Process

Nominations open in September and close in October each year. The nominating committees, succession planning committees, committee chairs and staff liaisons meet during November and December to review and identify qualified candidates for open board and committee positions.

The Global Nominating Committee meets in January the following year to review all recommendations for the boards and their committees and selects a slate of nominees. Board and committee terms begin in July each year.

The Committee Process

The appointed committee chairmen work with the assigned global board member nominees and staff liaisons to review and select candidates for their committees. Efforts are made to ensure that the membership of the committees are diverse, equitable and inclusive and any specific requirements, competencies and skills are taken into consideration.

New committee members are appointed by early March to fill terms beginning by July. The in-person committee meetings are usually held twice a year, with the first meeting following elections.  Terms are for one to three years, although committee chairmen may replace members who have not effectively contributed to committee work. Appointments may also be made to fill vacancies as needed.

Chapter Relations Committee (North America only)
The NANC selects the slate of candidates for the open District Advisor and District Representative positions in North America. District Advisors and District Representatives serve on the Chapter Relations Committee (CRC).
