IAF Premier Research Study 2020
Internal Audit Foundation Premier Research Study 2020
Assessing Competencies in Internal Audit
In Partnership with Deloitte
Beginning in 2019, the Internal Audit Foundation began concentrating its efforts to conduct a premier global research study annually, focused on a key aspect related to the profession and practice of internal auditing. The Foundation will work in collaboration with IIA Affiliates from around the world to secure participation from a diverse group of respondents.
2020 Research Focus: Assessing the State of Internal Audit Competencies Globally

The Foundation has selected this topic, to complement the release of The Institute of Internal Auditors’ Internal Audit Competency Framework. The framework, broken down into four disciplines: professionalism, performance, environment, and leadership communication, defines the required competencies necessary to display proficiency at the general awareness, applied knowledge, or expert level within 22 knowledge areas.
The Foundation, in partnership with Deloitte, is deploying a global survey to assess the competency level of today’s practitioners, related to the framework.
The Overall Objectives of This Study are to:
- Assess the current state of the internal audit profession by identifying the competency levels that exist in the field.
- Evaluate the competencies within the knowledge framework and their practical application in the workplace.
- Measure the relevance of the competencies in terms of individual performance according to job duties (position), organization, industry, and more.
- Discover the sufficiency of the resources and training available to foster the achievement of individual competencies.
- Provide insight to enable the development of valuable training materials for internal audit practitioners at all levels to increase their competency level across the disciplines.
