We are pleased to be a 2023 Building Awareness Champion!
During Internal Audit Awareness Month in May, we shared our passion for internal auditing, promoting the profession through a variety of events and campaigns designed to inform and engage, raise awareness, and help stakeholders understand the value of internal audit in their organizations.
Hello IIA Nashville,
Recently, I was asked to assume the role of the 23-24 Chapter President because the initial nominee had to step back due to excess obligations. I said yes, obviously. As a little background, I previously served as Chapter President in 1995-96 and have held too many chapter positions over the past years to mention. In fact, the last two years is the first time I haven’t been in an active role since I joined (back in the late 80’s). My inactive volunteer status was due to a change in the IIA bylaws that restricted service as a voting member of the Board of Governors to no more than 10 years without rolling off for at least one year. That said, I am honored to be able to serve again.
A lot has changed in our profession and our chapter over those years, including changes in technology, new tools and expanded ways we can positively impact our organizations. It is truly exciting to think about how far we’ve come. A lot has also changed in how we run the chapter, so I have some new things to learn.
In the spirit of the “What is Your Why” that so many of our members have shared this chapter year, here is my “Why”. I wasn’t pushed to get involved. I got involved to better understand what internal auditors were supposed to do, since it wasn’t taught in my college classes. Then I became a young manager and wanted to build a department that was “full service” rather than solely focused on financial and compliance related work. Being a member allowed me to build relationships where you can discuss challenges faced or learn from other professionals’ knowledge and experience. These were the driving reasons for me to become and remain a member. Whether you need an audit program for an area you’ve not audited before, are looking for how another organization implements key areas of the standards, or are dealings with audit committee members and executives, there will always be someone in the Chapter who has dealt with a similar issue and can lend help. There are many great reasons to be an active member, but these have always been the most compelling for me.
Whether we have not yet met or we are old friends, I look forward to working with the officers and board this year in service to the membership. I also look forward to seeing many of you at the in person meetings and events.
