To assist our Internal Audit Practitioner candidates, this page was created to provide answers to common questions related to the syllabus and exam updates occurring in 2025. Information is subject to change.
IAP Syllabus
Effective 28 May 2025, candidates pursuing the IAP designation will become certified by taking the CIA Part 1 exam. The version of the CIA Part 1 syllabus you are tested on will depend on your chosen exam language and the date you plan to test. The schedule below outlines when each language will transition from the 2019 to the 2025 CIA Part 1 syllabus. For details on both syllabus versions, visit our dedicated syllabus webpage.
Need IAP Exam Study Materials?
The new CIA Exam Review offered through The IIA and Becker will be available on 27 March 2025. IAP candidates can purchase single part study materials on CIA Part 1 to prepare for the updated IAP exam.
What is changing?
- The topic areas on the IAP exam syllabus will be updated to:
- Bring the Internal Audit Practitioner program up to date with current global practices.
- Provide more in-depth coverage of internal audit fundamentals.
- Achieve greater alignment among The IIA’s core certification.
- Create a student pathway to the Certified Internal Auditor designation.
- The IAP is being made a permanent designation with 20 hours of annual CPE required.
- Additional languages are being added to support global accessibility efforts.
Language Update Schedule
Effective 28 May 2025, the IAP examination will begin using CIA Part 1 in all languages. Then, following the schedule below, each language will transition from the 2019 CIA Part 1 syllabus to the 2025 CIA Part 1 syllabus.

If your IAP was awarded on or before 27 May 2025:
- Yes, you can apply to the CIA program, and you will receive a waiver for CIA Part 1. You must apply to the CIA program by 31 May 2026 to receive the waiver for CIA Part 1.
- Effective 1 June 2026, you will no longer be eligible for the CIA Part 1 waiver and will need to take CIA Part 1.
If your IAP is awarded after 27 May 2025:
- Yes, you can apply to the CIA program, and you will receive a waiver for CIA Part 1. You will maintain a waiver for CIA Part 1 for 4 years from the date your IAP was awarded.
- If your IAP designation was awarded more than four years ago, you will no longer be eligible for the CIA Part 1 waiver and will need to take CIA Part 1.

Candidate Scenarios

The revised Internal Audit Practitioner program will use the CIA Part 1 exam for assessment. Only the 2025 CIA Part 1 syllabus has been updated to align with the Global Internal Audit Standards. Effective 28 May 2025, the IAP exam will become CIA Part 1 in all languages. However, your chosen exam language will determine if you will be tested on the 2019 CIA Part 1 syllabus or the 2025 CIA Part 1 syllabus. The language schedule above indicates when each language will transition to the 2025 syllabus. If you test before 28 May 2025:
- Current Internal Audit Practitioner requirements are in effect. Candidates testing on or before 27 May 2025 will sit for the current IAP exam.
If you test on or after 28 May 2025:
- Candidates must pass the CIA Part 1 exam to earn the Internal Audit Practitioner. They will be tested on the 2019 CIA Part 1 syllabus or the 2025 CIA Part 1 syllabus depending on their chosen language and test date. Review the language schedule above to determine which CIA Part 1 syllabus you should study.

If you apply into the Internal Audit Practitioner program on or after 28 MAY 2025, your program window expires two years after your Internal Audit Practitioner application is approved.

Previously awarded Internal Audit Practitioner designations that expired will be restored to Active status. To maintain the permanent Internal Audit Practitioner designation, you must comply with the IIA’s Annual Certification Renewal Policy. Beginning in 2026, all individuals holding an active Internal Audit Practitioner designation must renew annually and attest that they have earned 20 hours of continuing professional education (CPE).
