Program Overview

The IIA and Internal Audit Foundation work to strengthen the internal audit profession by helping to fill the talent pipeline with internal audit-ready graduates. The Internal Audit Awareness Program (IAAP) and the Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP) were created to support higher education institutions committed to advancing internal audit education.

The IAAP recognizes schools that offer internal auditing as a standalone course, providing students with an introduction to the profession and the key activities of an entry-level internal auditor.

Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP)

The IAEP supports schools that offer a curriculum consisting of at least two internal audit courses. This program offers colleges or universities the opportunity to be recognized as a Center for Internal Auditing Excellence.

Get Recognized: Internal Audit Awareness Program Recognition Process

  1. Confirm external academic accreditation. The academic institution must hold external accreditation from a professionally recognized body, such as AACSB, EQUIS, or others. 
  2. Align your existing course syllabi with that suggested in the Global Model Internal Auditing Curriculum.
  3. Connect with your local IIA Chapter or National Institute to obtain a signature of support. If there is no local IIA contact in your area, reach out to The IIA Academic Relations team at Academic@theiia.org.  
  4. Submit a Request for Recognition Form to Academic@theiia.org. Acceptance to the program will be given within 60 days of form submission.
  5. Annually report on your program’s status. Participating schools are required to complete an annual report provided by The IIA’s Academic Relations team to maintain recognition.

Levels of the Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP) Program

Internal Auditing Foundation Program Requirements

Foundation

  • A college or university offering at least two internal audit courses
  • These courses must have been taught for a minimum of one year

Comprehensive Internal Auditing Program Requirements

Comprehensive

  • A curriculum within a college or university degree program
  • Three courses related to the internal audit profession
  • Courses equate to a concentration within a specific academic discipline

Centers for Internal Auditing Excellence Requirements

Center of Excellence

  • A curriculum within a college or university degree program
  • Four courses minimum related to the internal audit profession
  • Courses equate to a concentration, a minor, or a major within a specific academic discipline
  • Consideration for program quality, sustainability and longevity, and volume of students completing the program

Internal Auditing Education Partnership Program Eligibility

The Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP) recognizes colleges and universities that equip students for careers in internal auditing and lay the groundwork for students to become Certified Internal Auditors.

IAEP schools are accredited colleges or universities offering internal audit curricula within an undergraduate or graduate degree program, endorsed by The IIA. Schools must: 

  • Designate a faculty champion and institutional commitment — Appoint a faculty leader to coordinate, advocate for, and grow the program, ensuring its long-term success.  
  • Be recognized as a reputable source for internal audit talent — Demonstrate high academic standards and are recognized as quality sources to recruit internal audit talent. 
  • Partner with a local IIA Chapter or National Institute — Collaborate to provide students with networking opportunities, industry insights, and ongoing program support for sustained success.

Grants are available to IAEP institutions at the Foundation, Comprehensive, and Center of Excellence levels to support program advancement and sustainability, student engagement, the IAEP Advocate/Graduate Assistant program, and educator development.
