Building Awareness Champions
We are pleased to be a 2023 Building Awareness Champion!
During Internal Audit Awareness Month in May, we shared our passion for internal auditing, promoting the profession through a variety of events and campaigns designed to inform and engage, raise awareness, and help stakeholders understand the value of internal audit in their organizations.

I am honored for the opportunity to take over leadership of the storied IIA Chicago Chapter as President for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. As I reflect on my journey to this role, I think back on the many opportunities my membership in the chapter has provided at each step. Learning and development opportunities that have helped me advance in my career. Networking opportunities that have led to countless friendships, job opportunities, and an ever-growing network of peers to drawn upon for help. Finally, opportunities for fun that I could have never imagined when I was first “volun-told” to serve the Chapter 13 years ago.
As we move forward into our new fiscal year, I want to reflect on the phenomenal accomplishments of the past year. Firstly, think you to Puja Shah for your strategic and thoughtful leadership this past year. The dedication of all our chapter volunteers, including our Board of Governors and Officers, continues to drive substantial value for our members. The strength of our past leadership and their diligent financial stewardship has allowed us to remain a highly effective chapter. Just a few highlights from this past year:
- Hosted the District Workshop (July 2023) – To collaborate with other chapters in our district sharing ideas to add value in service to our members
- Annual Golf Classic at Cog Hill (August 2023) – a nearly sold-out networking event with perfect weather on one of the best golf courses in the area
- 10th Annual Hacking Conference (October 2023) – continuing to provide deeply needed information technology learning
- 63rd Annual Seminar (March 2024) – another year of increased attendance, with 6% attendee growth, as we continue to navigate large events post-pandemic
- Continued support to our IAEP Partner school DePaul University
- Continued top-level support the IIA Foundation for advancing research and knowledge in the profession
- In all more than 25 events dedicated to serving our members through learning and networking, and fun
I am proud of all the IIA Chicago Chapter continues to achieve and I firmly commit to ensuring we continue to provide these great opportunities to all our members. I challenge each of you to accept a new opportunity this year, whether through volunteering or attending any of our full calendar of events. Let’s have another great year!
Best Regards,
Eric Simaga, IIA Chicago Chapter President

Similar to the goals and objectives set by the organizations we work for and that we set for ourselves, The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and its Chapters set goals and objectives that guide their efforts to achieve desired results. Chapters communicate the status of their efforts to The IIA through the CAP. The CAP recognizes the activities Chapters perform to promote The IIA's strategies and objectives and Chapters' local objectives. It also sets minimum standards of performance for Chapters, and is a means for the IIA and Chapters to evaluate the achievement of established objectives. The CAP measures the ability of Chapter Leadership to meet its responsibilities in three categories: chapter health, professionalism and, most importantly, service to members. Points are earned for the activities Chapter Leadership and Chapter Members complete in these categories.
Chapters that attain the required point totals in each category and overall, are recognized as Bronze, Silver, or Gold Chapters.
Chapters that reach the Gold level in 10 of the last 11 years are recognized as Platinum Chapters.
Chapters that reach the Platinum level for 10 years are recognized as Ruby Chapters, for 15 years as Sapphire Chapters, and for 25 years as Diamond Chapters.
The Chicago Chapter is currently recognized as a Sapphire Chapter.
